Geranium – Essential Oil of the Month

Geranium - Essential Oil of the MonthBotanical Name
Pelargonium graveolens

Botanical Family
Geraniacea

Other Types of Geranium
There are literally hundreds of types of Geranium, but generally they are defined by their region, most commonly Egypt and Bourbon are sold in the UK. Rose Geranium is an oil I’m often asked about, it comes from the Pelargonium graveolens plant, but just a different variety. The botanical name will appear as Pelargonium graveolens var. roseum. The two oils are very similar in their chemical composition, it is really down to smell. I like both but tend to go for standard Geranium from Bourbon!!

Origins
Grown around the world for its uses in medicine and cosmetics it was originally found in the dry climate of Egypt, it is also sourced from the Isle de Bourbon, and this is my favourite variety.
