Ylang Ylang – Essential Oil of the Month

Botanical name: Cananga oderata
Botanical family: Anonaceae
Origins: Madagascar or Comores
Method of Extraction: Distillation of the flower heads
Colour: Greeny-Yellow
Smell: Woody, Earthy, Heady, Sweet and Floral
Chemical components: Alcohols, Esters, Phenols and Terpenes

History:

The Cananga tree is a tall evergreen that produces a variety of coloured flowers. It is said that the Yellow flowers product the best oil Ylang Ylang is often seen ins “Grades” this is because during the distillation process each Grade is taken out at a different time. It has been called the Queen of Oils.

Therapeutic Properties:

Ylang Ylang is generally used for mood improvement, PMS, menopause, insomnia and frigidity. It is great for relieving stress and intestinal infections as it is balancing and calming (sedative). It has great association with the reproductive system and can help improve hair growth, it has anti-spasmodic properties and is also antiseptic. A good all-rounder for someone just starting out their Essential Oil journey and a definite must for any essential oil first aid box.

Blends well with:

Most floral and citrus oils. As it is a heady oil I would always look toward the Lemon, Bergamot, Geranium and Mints.

Uses:

An excellent oil for skin care as it is both balancing and stimulating. Great to add to hair products to help stimulate growth as well as balance oily and dry scalp conditions

Hair Conditioning Blend:

100ml of Conditioner
5 drops Ylang Ylang
5 drops Geranium
3 drops Lemongrass

Relaxation Blend:

Use in your favourite diffuser before bed
3 drops Ylang Ylang
2 drops Vetivert
4 drops Lemon

Safety Note:

Can cause headaches and nausea in high concentrates, may irritate hypersensitive people.
